Internship Application
Rock Ministries is located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. We invite youth in the area to participate in free boxing, weigh training and grappling lessons, homework assistance, games, and other programs both within and outside of our facility. We use these activities to bring the community the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are also a church that meets on Sunday and Wednesday. In addition, we reach out to the neighborhood through street witnessing, a social services drop-in center, a health center, community Bible studies, a food pantry, block parties and service work in the area.
Rock interns are involved in all of these ministries. They are also assigned facility maintenance and upkeep responsibilities. Interns live on Rock property with full access to kitchen and bath facilities. They are overseen by one or more Rock staff who are responsible for their work assignments. Daily devotions and specific discipleship meetings are incorporated into their schedule.
The Rock’s neighborhood is among the poorest in America, with one of the highest crime rates. Our very block is one of the most active drug areas in the country. This means we are surrounded with nearly endless ministry opportunities; but it also means the work is challenging, the hours long and the commitment demanding. We are seeking intern applicants with a heart to serve, willing to sacrifice their own comforts for the sake of the Gospel. We are especially interested in those who feel a call to the urban mission field. Please consider this carefully before applying. Requirements and rules:
As in all Christian life, conduct during the internship is to be regulated by the standards of behavior and attitude prescribed in the Bible.
Interns will come under the oversight and authority of program coordinators, who are ultimately responsible to Rock Ministries’ pastors.
Intern applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time their internship begins.
Applicants must agree to a specific time commitment – typically either 3 - 4 months (2 months can be accommodated for college summer break).
A fee will apply for each intern totaling $10.00 per day for each expected day of stay. We recommend that this fee be sponsored by the intern’s home church. If this fee is a hardship, every consideration will be made by Rock Ministries.
Since interns will be working with the children we serve, all applicants must agree to a background/child abuse clearance check.
Tobacco products, alcohol drinking and (obviously) illegal drug use are prohibited during the internship.
The period of the internship is to be considered a fast from secular media; including music, movies, television, etc.
Dating is not permitted during the internship. For those in current relationships when they enter the Internship, please be prepared to have very limited contact with the other person.
Applicants must agree with all points of the following Rock Ministries’ Statement of Faith
STATEMENT OF FAITH
Here at the Rock Ministries of Philadelphia and The Rock-Calvary Chapel of Kensington, we’re Christians. That simply means we follow Jesus and His Word, the Bible. We’re not a denomination. We’ve got nothing against denominations, but we’d rather be associated with all those who love Jesus and hold to the essentials of Biblical faith.
The Bible is the Word of God. Period.
No one created God and God created everything.
God is a Trinity. There’s one God consisting of three distinct persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We don’t fully understand that, but it’s what the Bible says.
Like it or not, everyone is a sinner. We inherited sin from the first people, Adam and Eve, who rebelled against God. The result of sin is physical death and eternal separation from God (that is, Hell).
There’s a solution for sin! Jesus, the Son of God, stepped out of eternity; was born of the virgin Mary; and lived the perfect, sinless life that we could not. He died on the cross to suffer the punishment for sin in our place. He was buried and then rose from the dead. If we believe in who Jesus is and what He has done, all our sins are forgiven and we are promised an eternity in Heaven with God!
Love is why Jesus died for us. Our highest desire is to return that love to Him and share it with others.
Rock Ministries of Philadelphia and The Rock-Calvary Chapel of Kensington interact with a variety of people of every age that require counsel on a wide range of pressing social issues. All counsel that we provide will be Biblically based. We will never give counsel that contradicts the written Word of God.
